What's On Your CD player at the moment Mark, you sad Bastard?

Ok - as you asked so nicely here you go;

10th November 1998 (who knows when I'll be arsed to update this shit!)

  1. The Stranglers - Coup De Grace - excellent new album from the once Meninblack. This is a return to form - proved by the fact that the only review I have seen yet (Q Magazine) gives it a right slating! JJ back on vocals on a couple of tracks can't be a bad thing either.

  2. New York Ska & Jazz Ensemble - Get This - cool album - if you like The Skatellites you'll love this. If, though, you only like Two Tone Ska or the all new Ska-Core then be careful - this is beautifully crafted music that is exceptionally well played. Listening to it as I type! (not that I'm saying there is anything wrong with 2Tone or Ska-Core - I love that as well!!)

Cherry Poppin' Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot - hey this is a swing album! If you saw Hugh Cornwell on Planet Norwich the other week and enjoyed it then check this album out - you could also try looking for the excellent Royal Crown Review who do pretty similar stuff

Mad Caddies - Quality Soft Core - Ah ha - the first Ska-Core album on the list! This is the first album from this American band on the excellent Honest Don's label.

  3. The Stranglers - Exclusive Fan Club CD 1998 - check out the Rats Lair link on The Stranglers Page , join the fan club and you too could own this excellent live album!

    Update 21/08/99 - At last!!

  4. The Stranglers - Friday the Thirteenth - classic Stranglers live album, with a twist. Backed by The Electra Strings (a string orchestra of some 20 or so young ladies - brave!) Classic tracks from both Mark 1 and Mark 2 of the Stranglers, my only regret is that the band bottled out of including the version of Ice Queen that they played - just so I could demonstrate to my girlfriend that it really didn't work!!

  5. Short Music for Short People - Various. Brilliant VA album featuring 101 bands playing songs that last no more than 30 seconds. Loads of big names including - Bad Religion, Green Day, Lagwagon, Guttermouth, Offspring, The Damned, The Vandals, Pennywise, NOFX, Rancid and loads more - a real must to own!!

  6. Rancid - Life Won't Wait - Classic Rancid, but with plenty of new twists and turns included. This album - recorded all over the place, features loads of interesting guests - though, probably the best is the apperance of various ex-Specials members on the excellent track "Hooligans"

  7. Hugh Cornwell - First Bus To Babylon - this is the American re-release of "Wired" and includes 2 excellent addition tracks - the previously unreleased Stone Free (Hugh's nod to Jimi Hendrix) and the excellent 12" version of My Kind of Loving. Far more mainstream than his work with The Stranglers' this demonstrates that Hugh has always had an ear for a good tune.

  8. Jello Biafra - If Evolution is Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Evolve. The Excellent ex-Dead Kennedys vocalist proves, on his 5th spoken word album, that he has not lost either his bile or his humour in exposing the awful truth of American politics and life in general.

Go on Mark - We were so interested that we'd like to know what's on your Walkman at the moment!

  1. Mad Caddies - Duck and Cover - second album from this Ska-Core outfit. They have obviously moved up in the world as they are now on the excellent Fat Wreck Cords label

  2. Limp - Pop and Disorderly - brilliant debut album from these young punksters. Really good pop punk. Gets right up all the commuters noses on a morning on the old train into London!

    Update 21/08/99

Well, its not taken me long to update this page has it. The old Walkman has been consigned to a cupboard at home - we now have MINIDISK!!

So - what delights do we have on it at the moment

  3. Crass - Penis Envy - when this was out originally I thought it was a bit pedestrian and a bit lightweight - no doubt influenced by the fact that all the vocals were sung by women. What a diference a few years makes (yeah - OK 20 years! that dates me!!). This is classic politico punk at its best. Despite what a lot of people will think of Crass, they really could play a tune or two. This has everything from discordant chords through to really almost "beautiful" melodies. Just buy it!!

  4. Also on the current disk is the excellent new album from Frenzal Rhomb. This lot are a bunch of punkers from Australia and their new album "A Man's Not A Camel" is their first release on the excellent Fat Wreck Chords label. This was, I must admit, a disappointment - but give it a few listens - and it really grows on you. More melodic and definitely slower than their previous albums - with the highlight comedy moment coming from the track "I know why the dinosaurs became extinct...." Buy the album if only to find out why!!

Inflammable Material for all your Punk and Ska CDs
